In the beginning the catholics who migrated from Trinelvi, Tuticorin and Nagercoil, were scattered and lived separate and not as a catholic community. The Masses were continued to be held in the house of Mr Joseph Muthusamy and Ms Lilly (parishioners) until the property of 10 cents was bought by Fr P M Joseph and the place was renovated to be used as a church under the foot of the main hill at Thirukazhukundram. (Auxiliary Bishop of Madras-Mylapore then) on 3rd September 2000. Fr B Antony (Parish Priest of Oragadam then) desired to bifurcate Thirukazhukundram from Oragadam and made it into a separate parish and the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore decided to handover the parish to the Salesians.
Fr Bellarmine Fernando, sdb, Provincial of the Salesian Province of Chennai, appointed Fr Augustine Nathan, sdb, as the first Parish Priest of Thirukazhukundram.
